Robert Anthony was a long-time resident of enCircle’s Bedford Group Homes. He was beloved. He was a dear friend to residents and staff for over 20 years, so it was a joy to come together and celebrate his life with one of his very favorite activities, a good old fashioned cookout. Robert was always looking for baked beans, potato salad, hot dogs, hamburgers, banana pudding and, most importantly, Dr. Pepper.

Perhaps no one knew Robert better than Vicky Hurt, a Direct Support Professional at Robert’s Bedford Group Home. They had a natural connection because she understood what he needed without him having to say too many words. She knew him by his mannerisms and reactions.

"He had some OCD tendencies, and I knew his routine," Vicky explained. "He wanted coffee, juice and oatmeal every single morning. And he got it because I spoiled him."

Robert trusted Vicky enough to leave his important routine and go on an outing with her to Roanoke while the floors in his room were being redone. He absolutely loved trains, even kept a miniature one in his pocket, so they prioritized a visit to the Transportation Museum. This was, of course, the highlight of his trip but he also went out to eat and went shopping for country western décor for his new room. None of this typical, but all of this acceptable, as long as Vicky alongside.

"He trusted me with his life," Vicky said. "And he did great. It was a special time because it was just the two of us. I really miss him."
